A hydrometer measures the specific gravity (relative density) of a liquid compared to water.

It is a sealed glass or plastic tube with a weighted bulb at the bottom and a graduated stem. It floats upright in the liquid; the denser the liquid, the higher it floats, and the reading is taken at the liquid’s surface on the scale.

Common uses

• Brewing, winemaking, and distilling: Tracks sugar content (potential alcohol) in wort, must, or mash and monitors fermentation progress.
• Automotive: Checks the specific gravity of battery electrolyte (state of charge) or the concentration of antifreeze/coolant.
• Dairy industry: Measures milk density to assess quality or detect dilution.
• Petroleum and fuels: Determines density of gasoline, diesel, or other oils.
• Aquariums and marine work: Measures salinity of saltwater.
• Laboratories and chemistry: General density or concentration checks for solutions.
